Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I've never done any electrical work on my car.  Will I be able to install this conversion?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     A: Absolutely! You must remove the rear cover of the fixture by unscrewing the two white knurled knobs in the trunk. Remove the lens by pulling it from the fixture from the exterior of the fixture. Then remove the electrical connector to the light by carefully pulling it, these can be stubborn, so try rocking it side-to-side, it will eventually come loose. Unscrew the four 8mm nuts holding the light fixture to the car and pull the light fixture out from the outside.  Now you remove the Brake, Run and Turn Signal Bulbs from the fixture.  Take the short nylon tube pieces (included) and pass them over the center connector in the bulb socket (these are to prevent chafing of the wires from the LED arrays). One at a time, insert the arrays into the fixture, passing their wires and plug through the center of the socket to the rear and secure the aray to the fixture by tacking it in on all corners with a dab of RTV Silicone or Hot Glue (preferred because of it's quick set time).  With all three arrays tacked in place, take the interface connector (with it pre-soldered wires and plug) and plug it into each plug for the arrays matching the color-coded wires and attach the pigtails to the fixture for the Reverse Lamp. Now, reinstall the fixture into the car using the four 8mm nuts you previously removed, reinstall the lens, plug the interface board into the car's electrical connector and fit the connector into the hollow inside the fixture.  Replace the rear cover and secure with the white knurled lnobs and you're done!

Q: I already have an Electronic Flasher on my car.  Will I need to replace this?
A: No, it will work just fine.

Q: Is the Flash Rate the same as with the OEM incandescent bulbs?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         A: Yes. The Rear Turn/Hazard Lights flash at a rate between 115-120 Flashes/minute.  A range exists due to variances in individual car electrical systems.

QIf I don't wish to use the Running Light and Brake Light Panels as dual-purpose, can this feature be disabled?                                                                                                                                                                                            A: Our primary goal in producing these LED arrays is safety, in part, through enhanced visibilty by making both taillight panels (Running Lights, Brake Lights) dual-purpose.  While we strongly recommend not disabling this feature, if you should insist, you can email us at: info@2002s.net and we can instruct you how this can be done - we will only provide this information upon written request.

Q: Do I need to convert my Front Turn Signals and Sidemarker Lights to LED to use this conversion?                                                                                                                                                                                                                       A: No, these arrays have been designed to work with those existing incandescent bulbs. And, since our conversion corrects any possible bad grounding issues with the rear lights, they may actually improve the operation of other lights in the Turn, Run and Hazard circuits.

Q: Why is the Reverse Lamp not an LED array?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        A: In a perfect world, it would be our choice to utilize an LED array for the Reverse Lamp.  But, the components used in our arrays are very expensive.  In order to keep the price point affordable, and since the Reverse Lamp is seldom used, and when it is it's usually done in conjunction with Brake or Directional Lights (which are highly visible), it was decided to retain the incandescent bulb to perform this function. Since the Reverse panel of the lens is clear, this is more than adequate.

Q: Are these LEDs bright enough for daytime viewing?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              A: These arrays are four times brighter than the existing incandescent bulbs - they are highly visible in daylight, even direct sunlight - see pictures at the top of the Home page.

Q: Are these LED arrays legal?
A: Yes, they meet all NHTSA requirements by exceeding the performance of incandescent bulbs in every respect.

Q: What if one of the LEDs burns out?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      A: These LEDs are rated at 25,000-100,000 Hours so that is unlikely.  But, if it did, there would still be a minimum of 48 LEDs in that single array continuing to function.

Q: Is there a conversion kit for the 1966-1973 cars with Round Taillights?
A: Yes! The prototype for the early Round lights is ready for Beta Testing and will be available for sale very shortly.  If you would like, you can email us at: info@2002s.net and we will contact you once they are for sale.
